Grading Abbreviations

The following are common abbreviations I use when grading and providing comments on assignments:

not exactly (you’re on the right track, but what you say is not quite right)

sentence fragment (don’t use them)

word choice (you could use better words here)
EXP.
explain or expand

you didn’t provide a page number reference; you should have
Red.
redundant; no need to repeat yourself like this

break this into a new paragraph here
IAB
intellectual autobiography (e.g. “The first time I heard this argument, it seemed really powerful….”); don’t give one.
1.1a, 2.3a, etc.
These refer to the evaluation criteria for paper assignments; reference to them means you need to improve on that point.
IRR.
irrelevant; this does not need to be in your paper.
NN
not needed (what you have here didn’t need to be included in your paper)
ROS
run-on sentence (avoid them)
