Kissing Hank’s Ass

http://www.jhuger.com/kisshank.php
A student just showed me this. OMG, it’s hilarious. Warning: Religious folk might take offense (though I don’t intend to engage in any offense giving).

Colin McGinn on Religion & Scientism

This is a nice interview Colin McGinn did with Bill Moyers:
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/faithandreason/portraits_mcginn.html
McGinn, a philosopher and academic, is a nice alternative to the pop atheists (like Dawkins, etc.). I especially like that in this interview he makes clear that he doesn’t endorse scientism. That the pop atheists often seem to be scientistic is something I find unfortunate [...]

Ethics and Atheism

Why, oh why, do theists think that the only source of morality is religion? They often state this as obvious, without argument, and assume that atheists have no way to account for morality. Now, theists have wised up a bit and noted that they needn’t say that all atheists are immoral people in [...]

Fodor on Problems with Evolution

Jerry Fodor, a philosopher at Rutgers, fairly recently (Oct. 2007) published an article in the London Review of Books entitled “Why Pigs Don’t Have Wings” in which he purports to provide a critique of the traditional Darwinian account of evolution. Here’s the link:

Louis Theroux and the Disutility of Religion

Louis Theroux is an interesting documentary film-maker guy who primarily works for BBC2. A must see is his “The Most Hated Family in America” (59 mins):

(Thanks to Chris for introducing me to this!)
The people in this video are absolutely crazy. They are just another modern day example

4 Horsemen: Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens

There is a new movement of pop atheists, lately dubbing themselves “The Four Horsemen”. They are: Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell), Sam Harris (The End of Faith), and Christopher Hitchens (God is Not Great). There is a ton of media online about them, including interviews debates, etc. [...]

Bill O’Reilly is a Relativist about Truth?

Bill O’Reilly recently had Richard Dawkins on his show. Did anyone notice that he basically espoused relativism about truth? Here’s the relevant piece of dialog:

“Faith” in God?

I’m getting exhausted with hearing the word “faith” used in such deviously unclear ways lately.
First of all, people often say “my faith” now instead of “my religion.” The word “faith” in this new usage is entirely synonymous with “religion.” Or they say “He is a person of faith,” which just means that he [...]

Evolution (The PBS TV Series Videos)

A neat TV series on PBS, called Evolution, is now getting to be on YouTube (I guess it originally aired in 2002). Start here (Evolution Ep1: Darwin’s Dangerous Idea):

I know the first show/episode (Darwin’s Dangerous Idea) is on YouTube, broken up into 11 videos; I’m not sure about the rest of the episodes. If [...]

Atheism: A Rough History Of Disbelief (With Jonathan Miller)

Jonathan Miller has a documentary that was aired on the BBC called Atheism: A Rough History Of Disbelief. It’s a well-done documentary on the origins of atheism. It’s nice to watch a program that actually solicits the expertise of today’s professional philosophers (e.g., Miller talks with Colin McGinn, Daniel Dennett, etc.).
Here’s the first [...]
